Used Car Import Regulations in Zambia
Zambia accepts only right-hand drive vehicles. There is no legal age limit, but a 20% motor vehicle surtax applies to vehicles over 5 years old. Pre-inspection by JEVIC or Bureau Veritas is mandatory.

Import Eligibility

Import Duties & Taxes
Based on customs duty of 25% (CIF):
• Excise 15–30%: increases in steps above 1,500cc.
• VAT 16%: levied on CIF + duty + excise.
• Motor Vehicle Surtax 20%: added for vehicles over 5 years.
Vehicle Condition
Both new and used vehicles are allowed if age requirements are met. Costs are higher for vehicles over 5 years.

Steering (RHD/LHD) Rules
Only right-hand drive vehicles are permitted. Left-hand drive vehicles are exceptions, such as ambulances and fire engines.
Shipping Methods
Discharged by RORO or container at Dar es Salaam (TZ) / Durban (ZA), then delivered overland to Zambia.
