Used Car Import Regulations in South Africa

In South Africa, commercial imports of used vehicles are effectively prohibited and allowed only under specific conditions such as personal use. Customs duty of 30% and VAT of 15% apply, among others.

Import Duties & Taxes

Customs duty of 30%, ad valorem duty (sliding scale based on vehicle value) and VAT of 15% apply.

Vehicle Condition

(Only right-hand drive vehicles can be imported.)

Required Documents

An import permit (AP), approval from the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS), etc. are required.

Steering (RHD/LHD) Rules

Import of left-hand drive vehicles is prohibited.
