Used Car Import Regulations in Kenya
Kenya accepts only right-hand drive vehicles within 8 years of first registration (2017 models or later for 2025 arrivals). Pre-export roadworthiness inspection by JEVIC/QISJ is mandatory.

Import Eligibility
Age limit: within 8 years of first registration (2017 models or later for 2025 arrivals)
Compliance with KS 1515:2000 and pre-export roadworthiness inspection (JEVIC/QISJ) mandatory
Right-hand drive only. Left-hand drive is prohibited in principle (except special-purpose vehicles)
Special-purpose vehicles (fire engines, etc.) over 8 years may be conditionally allowed (KEBS notice, June 2025)

Excise duty 20% (≤1,500cc) / 25% (>1,500cc)
VAT 16% (on CIF + duty + excise)
IDF 3.5% & RDL 2% (both on CIF)
Vehicle Condition
Both new and used vehicles within the age requirement can be imported

Original commercial invoice, Bill of Lading, deregistered logbook (export certificate)
Pre-inspection certificate (CoR/JEVIC)
Import Declaration Form (IDF), KRA PIN, etc.
Steering (RHD/LHD) Rules
Right-hand drive (RHD) required. Left-hand drive only in limited exceptions such as replacement vehicles for returning residents and government special-purpose vehicles
